Is Miley Cyrus Still Vegan?

Miley Cyrus stopped being vegan in 2020 because of her health

With fans following Cyrus' lead on the vegan lifestyle, it’s understandable that they were shocked when Cyrus revealed a change to her diet on The Joe Rogan Experience in 2020.

After seven years of vigorously advocating the diet and the lifestyle, she told Rogan “I’ve had to introduce fish and omegas into my life, because my brain wasn’t functioning properly.

For fans, it was a concerning comment and one that angered many. Since her announcement in 2020, Cyrus has been the victim of backlash from fans and naturopaths. But she insists her decision has been based on the impact following a vegan diet has had on her health.

The singer also told Rogan she had experienced intense pain in her hips, which she believed was connected to malnutrition.

Miley Cyrus' Obviously Out Of It Jimmy Fallon Interview Embarrassed Her Into Getting Sober
After feeling humiliated by her own Jimmy Fallon interview, Miley Cyrus decided to make a huge life change by getting sober.

From 2013 to 2019, Miley followed a very strict vegan diet but said she had noticed her brain wasn’t as sharp as it should be. The singer remembered performing at the Glastonbury Music Festival when she felt as though she was 'running on empty.’

Miley Cyrus Admitted Going Pescetarian Was "Traumatic"

Miley Cyrus cried when she decided to try fish for the first time in years

Cyrus told Rogan how she cried when ex-husband Liam Hemsworth cooked a piece of fish on the grill for her after she realized she needed to take in animal protein. She told Rogan it was an incredibly traumatic experience.

For Cyrus, the thought of eating fish made her cry. In fact, in 2015, speaking on The Tonight Show, Miley spoke about how she became vegan because of how intelligent fish were.

The singer had a pet blowfish that would swim to greet her every time she returned home. After it died, she got a tattoo with its image on her arm.

The Wrecking Ball singer is quick to point out that despite the dietary change, she still cares deeply about animals.

She's reminded fans that she has over 20 animals on her Nashville farm and 20 more at her Calabasas home.

Cyrus told Rogan she was expecting anger from fans, but when it came to animals, her conscience is clear that she does the best for them, and will continue to do so.

Cyrus now describes herself as a Pescatarian, and her diet involves eating fish in addition to vegetables and plant-based foods.

Cyrus added that since reincorporating fish and gluten-based products into her diet, she has found herself to be “much sharper,” and that many of her other health concerns have vanished. In addition, she commented that she realized that to be able to perform on stage for hours at a time, she needed fats and protein from fish that "...an infinite number of avocados never could.”

Nutritionists Are Concerned About Miley Cyrus' Comments About Veganism

Some nutritionists do not agree with Miley Cyrus' reasoning for no longer being vegan

Cyrus said she was expecting a negative response from fans, but she has also faced criticism from nutritionists, who have said that her comments are unfounded and vague.

They’re also concerned that as a vegan celebrity, her decision can have a huge impact. Cryus isn’t the only celebrity to drop a vegan lifestyle. She’s joined other stars like Anne Hathaway, Simon Cowell, Zooey Deschanel, Channing Tatum, and Ellen DeGeneres, who have all moved away from a plant-based diet.

But for some of Cyrus' fans, stepping away from something she supported so vehemently is too big a shock. They say they do not understand why she only came out publicly a year after making the decision to change her diet.

Perhaps Cyrus herself says it best: “I think when you become the face of something, it’s just a lot of pressure”.
