Who is May Calamawy? Moon Knight‘ Layla El-Faouly
May Calamawy (born on October 28, 1986) is a 25 years old Egyptian actress who rose to prominence in 2019 after doing the recurring role of Dena Hassan in Hulu’s “Ramy.” In 2022 she again caught buzz after landing the role of Layla El-Faouly in Oscar Isaac’s Marvel web series “Moon Knight,” which aired on March 30 on the Disney+ platform.
The show includes a U.S. soldier receiving powers of Egypt’s mythological moon god which he later realizes is a curse sugar-coated with blessing. Jeremy Slater, the story writer, and Justin Benson, the director, both received their due appreciation from the viewers for creating such a masterpiece.
What is the Ethnicity of May Calamawy?
In Bahrain, May Calamawy (25 years) was born to her Palestinian mother and Egyptian father named Mohamed Calamawy, on October 28, 1986. A couple of years after birth, she moved to Doha, Qatar, and spent her life there till the completion of schooling. Post schooling, she shifted to the USA to study industrial design.
After coming to America, she felt like becoming an actress and pursuing her childhood dream, so she applied for admission to Emerson College; luckily, she got selected and studied bachelor’s of arts in acting from 2008 to 2012. She also attended acting classes at NYC’s famous William Esper Studio from 2014 to 2016.
Motivation from “Death Becomes Her”
Every actor has a story behind their acting career, and so has May Calamawy, which she shared during an interview with QNews Hub. As per the interview, she was only five when she watched a movie called “Death Becomes Her.” After watching this movie, Calamawy got the motivation to become an actress, and after post-schooling, she came to the USA to achieve her dream.
Beginning of Acting Career
In the beginning, Calamawy’s career included only short movies only like “Temperance,” “Santa Claus in Baghdad,” “Hassad Al Möta,” and “Paradise Falls.”
All these above-mentioned short movies are those in which May acted before her graduation. “Meet Cute,” “1 Out of 30,” “The Bed,” “Moi Aussi Je t’aime,” and “Saeed” are all those movies that this Egyptian actress did after completing her bachelor’s.
May’s social group while studying at William Esper Acting Studio grew exponentially. She learned about an NYC-based William Morris Agency from her peers, later appointed as her talent manager.
Only after connecting with WME did new and better acting opportunities start appearing for her, with her first significant break in 2011 as a T.V. show called “Checking In.” It was a Naim Zaboura production in which May’s role was of a teenage girl named Raya.
After the first significant paying job, the next chance for the actress appeared six years later in season one of the T.V. series known as “BKPI.” Those days were tough for May Calamawy because she was not getting any role and the ones she was getting were either for 1 or 2 episodes.
The perseverance of this Bahrain-born female artist paid off in 2019 when the judges at the casting auditions for the show “Ramy” got impressed by her performance. They gave her the role of Dena Hassan, and with the release of this show, May became an overnight celebrity.
The other popular shows in which Calamawy appeared in minor roles are “FBI, “The Long Road Home,” and “The Brave.” She also has in a few movies, namely “Djinn,” “Together Together,” and “Thursday.”
There was a time when this actress was struggling to find a single acting job, but now things have changed, and May Calamawy works with big banners/companies like Marvel Studio.
May Calamawy’s Personal Life
When the actress came to the U.S. for the first time, it wasn’t very comforting because she had never had such an experience before. Leaving one’s home country to settle in a new one is not easy, but May was very clear about it. She is a courageous woman who set her life’s goal and achieved it with dedication.
The road to getting her first major break was not easy for her, but her close friends helped and gave her the needful support in this journey. There is no data to reflect if, walking down the path of the acting journey, she ever met a special whom we can term as the boyfriend of May Calamawy.
